Open Threaded Hole

Postby poppadre » Tue Jun 21, 2016 10:04 am

Going over the new wing last night I noticed there was some oil built up around the engine and fuel pump. Looks like its coming from the threaded hole in the pictures. Should this be closed off? What is this hole for?

Actually when Honda builds the heads, there machined exactly the same...no left or right...that way the guy who puts it together won't get it mixed up.The way the cams and seals are attached determine left or right head.
The tapped hole also is on the front side of the head in exactly the same place and the timing belt cover back plate attaches there.

Thanks again RBGERSON. After I change the timing belts I'll do the valve clearance check. Would this be where the leak is coming from? Is this the gasket I would need? Honda GASKET, HEAD COVER Part # 12328-371-000

When doing the valve checks do you have to replace the gasket every time? Can I get away with just replacing the leaky one?

Spray off all the oil gunge (brake cleaner works really well for this) and put a light dusting of talcum powder on the area. Then run the engine. Where the oil is actually coming from will become apparent very quickly and obviously.

Most likely place for your leak is the tach cable connector. Behind and below the pump.

Yes that is the valve cover gasket..No you don't change them at every valve check or oil change just when they start to leak..but the leaking can also be caused by worn out rubber insets for the valve cover bolts if they loose there give they don't seal/tighten the cvoers correctly and you can get a leak.

But as said above 1st Id the leak..baby power a good plan, again three sources likely..tach cable = bad o ring, tach to head connection..loose bolts or bad fiber gasket and last valve cover gasket.
