Running hot at motorway speed

Postby ofb » Wed Jun 22, 2016 4:17 am

Firstly, hello :) new here and to the GL1100. When I picked up the bike, temp gauge sat half way for a while, but slowly went up while on the motorway, needle sat just off the red ! Soon as I got off the motorway, slower speed, gauge went back to just above half. Any thoughts guys . 1983 bike , naked.

Hello and welcome.
Before delving into the actual cooling system, Is the fuel gauge behaving itself? Just thinking that, at higher motorway speeds, the alternator voltage output will be higher and, if the 7v regulator that feeds the temp and fuel gauges is on the way out (not unheard of!), the temp AND fuel readings will slowly climb. Obviously, if the fuel gauge is stable then it's not the regulator.

Thanks Maz
I don't recall the fuel gauge climbing.
Header tank had water in it when I checked, not a lot, but some.

check the water pump weep hole is it leaking..if so pump replacement needed. Did the fan come on?? if not fan or the switch could be bad. Next, Check the water level in the radiator , if that's Ok drain and flush/clean the system add new fluid.. If that doesn't do it on to thermostat.

Side air scoops must be on radiator. Also, maybe it's time for a coolant system flush.
My exercise bike is a goldwing.

Thanks all , side scoops are fitted. I'm thinking a cooling system flush next and take it from there. :)

Where is the water pump? And the fan does work

Sounds alot like my bike a couple of months ago- it was doing the same thing. Turns out it was the radiator being clogged. Changed it out for one on E-bay for $40. Works fine. These bikes are sensitive when it comes to the cooling system. I would recommend changing the thermostat and hoses while your in there- even if they look O.K. Regards, Johnny
