Wheel swap/ compatible wheels

Postby ofb » Sat Jun 25, 2016 1:30 am

My 83 ( guessing a standard model, forgive the lack of knowledge ) has comstars fitted, but I would love a set of earlier spoked ally rim wheels :)

Has anyone successfully done this swap , are they compatible ?
Wheels from the 75 -79 bike on to a 83 .

Not directly..issues with calipers, fork diameter 75-77 smaller, 78-83 I think are the same..but you say you have an 83 and have comstars if they are the ones with riveted 'spokes" to rim that's not stock 83 should have the cast wheels.. .. Also tire size changed a bit and speedo/tach info would not accurate. I think all the axle sizes are the same 78 to 83 but that's about it. Changing out the triple tree and the whole front end works..to a get old style spoke wheels form the 75-77..I THINK...JUST NEED bearing to fit he steering stem.

Mmmm, what about the different/ rear drive unit bolting to the earlier wheel.

And , yes, I've got the comstars with the rivet on spokes , 83 GL1100c

It's been awhile but I think 75-79 hubs are interchangeable..and 80-83; but shocks mounting etc. different between the two years groups..but not sure about that. The bolting to the output shaft I think is interchangeable 75-83. best to keep hubs and wheels together as the splines wear in together so swapping wheel and not the hub can cause issues with the splines. Note the output shafts are not all the same either.

Since you already have comstars on your 83 that's not stock..so you calipers etc. are probably not stock either. Disk different you need to figure what's on there now..but like I said for the front swapping the triple and forks as one is the best/easiest to do.

A better place to ask questions is on the NGW site in the customizing forum. Guys know a lot more than I do..it
been awhile since I did ant real parts swapping and mods.
