I have an 81 interstate i had oil leakage on the left fork, so i pulled out both forks the one on the left i chsnged its oil seal and changed the oil on both forks( 8 oz ATF each)!
When i put them back on! All of the sudden i sat on the boke and they are stiff as hell and the bikes handling hard!!

The manual calls for 7.4oz of ATF / Fork Oil per leg. Maybe the extra .6oz (extra 8%) is making it stiff. Try to open the fork oil drain slightly to let out 0.6oz of ATF. Letting off the air first of course.

I had a difficult time with mine only to be solved by a different reassembly procedure.
I suspect that something is tightened in the wrong sequence.
It took me a few times to get it mine operate smooth again. The oil should not stop the forks from being pushed. Its suppose to dampen how fast they extend.
Going by the book is fine if everything is new.Unfortunatly it does not account for wear and misalignments.Even turning a fork from its original position can cause some binding.
I do have a lengthy description if you want.It is time consuming to finish but the results seem much better than by the book.
It does require removing the springs and putting them in last. The only way to identify where binding is at.

OK.I can go into great detail but first...what you just mentioned may be the key to your problem.
If you had great difficulty on one fork, its most likely that's where your sudden binding is coming from.
It sounds like there is lip damage to the upper slide bushing. It can be trimmed up.

I'm gonna suggest first removing that fork and tube.Dont remove the spring but do remove the lower bolt to release the fork from the tube.

You won't be able to compress the fork but it should easily slide up till the lower bushing contacted the upper one.

I'm gonna take a leap here but I'll guess that you'll have a hard time pulling the fork free from the tube.If this is true, youll have to get it apart again and fix the binding upper slide.
By the way..been there done that..
You will probably see the top lip of the slide having impact damage and slightly belled surface.this can be carefully Filed.
I set my slide by using a PVC coupler or PVC pipe that just fits over the fork.I also set the large washer on top of the slide and gently tap it into place. If needed,a file can taper the bottom edge of the slide so it goes in smoother. It should not take great effort and the fork should move smoothly after its set.
