gas leaking out of tailpipes

Postby drmichael@excite.com » Sat Aug 21, 2010 9:21 pm

I just bought an 1981 Gold Wing on Ebay. It has 15k Miles. The seller said he recently had the tank and carburetors cleaned by a Honda dealer. He has had it for year, but it sat for 10 years before he bought it.
The problem is that gas comes out of the tail pipes, especially when it is idling. Someone told him the floats are stuck and someone else told him to rebuild the carbs.
Anyone ever have this problem? Suggestions for fixing short of rebuiliding the carbs?
Thanks,
Mike

Floats or floats needles stuck open..you can try banging on the carb bowls with a screw driver or some sea foam in the gas..other than that it's time for a rebuild or at least a cleaning.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

Make sure you shut the petcock off when you're not riding it!

Thanks. I knocked the carburetors and it ran ok. Then when i next started it, the engine had a significant knock until I got the rpms up. Eventually it kept stalling out. I am not noticing gas coming out of the pipes, so I think I may have a carb problem, even though they were cleaned this summer.

Hydrolock can bend or break things - get that fixed right away! Sounds like carb floats to me.
