GL 1100 project

Postby GL1100DX » Mon Jul 18, 2016 10:43 am

Hello and thank you from awesome forum. I have had GL1100 couple of months now and I have put it some time and money. Something done:

-Timing belts and tensioners
-Water pump, all seals, thermostat
-Oil dipstick, motor oil, final gear oil
-brake fluids, rear master cylinder rebuild kit
-Rear wheel's gear lubrication with Mos2 (it was all dry!)
-fuel filter, valve clearance, carb sync
-spark plugs, battery, all electrical got some contact cleaner
etc....

We are going to go about 4000-5000km road trip with gf, and I have build bike to make that trip and hopefully many more :)

Problem: after carb sync it did purr like a big cat, very beautifull idle and nice low rpm. Last weekend we had trip and i forgot to open stupid petcock. I opened the petcock but idle did remain very rough, and everything was just like before carb sync.

I did sync carbs again, nothing in there. Put some Molytech tms carb cleaner in gas, no help so far.

Primary chain noise is very..disturbing. So, what else can make same noise as carb out of sync?

-Bike did eat some **** when gas got low cause petcock was closed?
-Some other reason I cannot understand?

Please help so I can keep this old bird flying :)

Stupid.

Just after wrote this went out because remember something. When I did last time sync, I adjusted valves. And Alternator bolt was loose.

Opened the cover bolt and kaboom, stupid bolt loose. It did gave that dreadful noise. Now she puurrsss like a big cat again :)

So if you have GL1100 and rough idle, bad idle, noise check the alternator bolt!

Soon we will hit the road :)

One little thing: It was Stator/generator bolt what was loose! :)

Sorry my English, even if you read a lot but not usually have to write anything...

And thank you very much about awesome DIY articles, without them those repairs/maintenance would have been hard/impossible to do.

Hello!

I have never removed engine from bike, everything i have done can be done without engine removal.

Alternator/generator/stator bolt:

-remove bolt cover
-get 12mm socket
-with spark plugs on tight bolt

This is not enough, it WILL open again so I did like this:

-put gear 1 on, bike on center stand, place wood/brick something front of rear wheel
-tight the bolt, rear wheel locked you will get bolt tight enough. I did not measure torque, do not overscrew :)

If there is better way feel free to tell :)

5000km Norway's most beautiful and pretty challenging roads, fully loaded over 500kg full weight, and she fly like nothing :)

Timing belt cover start giving some oil when driving over 4000rpm longer distance in warm weather. Cam or crankshaft seal, not giving oil if in light drive.

Thanks for your reply , :) ,here are couple more questions :
Have you been able to hear noise from the engine only while idling or noise was a present at idling and taking of (releasing/engaging clutch lever)?
Have you been able to feel vibration while taking of?
I hope that you don't mind being asked about your experience with this problem ?All this information will greatly help our GW community .
Your help is greatly appreciated .
Kind regards Tomos
ps.Have a safe and enjoyable trip.
