GL1100 trip counter malfunctioning

Postby tylers883 » Wed Jul 20, 2016 10:21 am

Just bought the bike a few months ago, the trip counter was in working condition. I have been resetting it when I stop for gas, and it has been reporting back to me that a full tank gives me roughly 230 kms ( so I've had plenty of evidence that it was working well for me).

Anyway, starting last week, the trip counter is starting to read fast. A 15 km ride will report as 115 kms.

As a means to troubleshoot, I reset it to 99999.9, a few kms down the road, it was reading 90003.5 ( the left digit did not wrap around correctly) then about 25 kms later it was showing 90126.5 ( ie the third digit from the left wrapped around when it shouldn't)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Special thanks in advance,

Tyler

If I assume that your speedometer and odometer are counting correct..the trip odometer, odometer and speedometer receive pulses from the front wheel.
Each display circuit processes the pulses for each display...meaning that the spedo has it's own computer for the display..separate from the trip computer circuit and the electromechanical odometer unit.
All you describe is one failing circuit(display) in the instrument cluster.
Inside the cluster are 2 complete computer logic boards populated with many (no longer available) surface mounted IC's.
The only thing replaceable are some electrolytic filter caps...They may be age deteriorated.
I have seen on one,the connector plug on the pc board did have a few hairline solder cracks.
You would have 2 options...
Live with it and watch the odometer numbers or...
Disassemble the display, replace all the caps, solder any seen bad connections and hope it fixes the problem..

Is the trip meter electronic or mechanical?

The digits are printed on mechanical medium.

I have never had the unit apart but if I were to bet about the inside being mechanical, I would bet as high as I could.

If you have this cluster, the trip odometer is all mechanical.

If this is your cluster, the trip odometer is completely electronic and the odometer is hybrid electromechanical.

OK.It would be much easier to replace the whole unit. The mechanical drum with the numbers are plastic with plastic gears and trip actuators. Most likely cracked and pieces laying in the bottom.

Thanks. I have a parts bike lined up. The bike is complete except the piston collided with a valve that popped into the compression chamber........ $300 for everything. And it has good tires.

I will attempt to swap spèedometer/odometer units. If I'm successful, i'll rip apart the damaged one and post some photos of what I find.

Really good price for a partsbike. If you have room, protect it from the elements, spray everything with oil and keep it for all the parts.
There's nothing like being your own parts supplier.
My parts bike served me very well for many years.
