1982 Aspencade turned into cruiser

Postby mnmike » Sat Jul 23, 2016 10:13 pm

back in 2014 I decided to make some changes to my bike since I mainly rode it to work, and didn't tour on it.

I removed the fairing, rear shelf, cut the passenger seat off (so I can see the fender), powder coated lots of chrome black, replaced the headlight, added riding lights, and painted it navy blue.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

The URL of OP's images is bad. He's using the internal I.P. of his modem or router.

Nice mod..but it's shame you didn't start with a bike that was in rougher condition..looked like you had a 9 or 10 to start with.

You are joking right? My pictures must be blurry because, the tires, front master cylinder, valve cover, tail light lens, speedo cluster, and hand grips look different in my pictures....by the way...what was your reason for removing the engine protection bars?...oh...and seat color.
My exercise bike is a goldwing.

Magnified, the front master cylinder looks the same to me. Valve cover has definitely been changed. I see other changes - footboards installed, painted intake runners, fork brace, new tires, obviously the front lights and instrument cluster. Taillight is original. But if you're inferring that the pictures are of two different bikes, I don't really see evidence that supports that.

Thanks guys.

Different bike: LOVE the conspiracy theories!! I promise it's the same bike, just 8 years apart.

Some more information: I inherited the bike back in 2006 from my Uncle in non running condition. It was rusty, had wasps nests all around the engine, all three calipers were rusted to the disks, both master cylinders needed rebuilding, and the carbs had varnish in them. It also had many electrical issues. When I got the bike it had the aftermarket valve covers on it an they were corroded a bit. It also came with a box that included the original valve covers, timing covers, etc.
I spent the summer disassembling it, cleaning it up, rebuilding the brakes, had the carbs cleaned (at a place I found on eBay), etc, etc. I rode it that way to work and around Minnesota from fall 2006 to fall 2013.

Here's the original build page I built: http://www.prairieroad.com/wing/

Then in spring 2014 I decided to make it look more like a cruiser since I like that look and 99% of my riding is to work and back. I removed the engine protection bars for better foot position when on the highway pegs. I'm 6' tall, and it makes a HUGE difference having the highway pegs lower, and the boots resting against he valve covers. I used some steel bar bolted to the frame above the timing cover then added honda highway pegs. I had much of the original aluminum and chrome powder coated black for the cool look.

Here's the build page of the reboot: http://www.prairieroad.com/wingReboot/

Ironically, my Uncle (who now has a Harley Road King) called me last year wanting to go on a motorcycle trip out west.
Since it was on my bucket list, I immediately said yes. Then I started work to get the trunk back on the bike, and bought a windshield off craigslist for $40.00. (I had cut the 'shelf' off the bike to make it a cruiser. I fabricated brackets to reattach the top portion of the shelf to the bottom portion, then painted the trunk to match the rest of the bike.

Here's the page from the trip: http://www.prairieroad.com/us/2016/west/

Thanks again guys!
Mike
