'83 GL1100I: Indicator lights not indicating

Postby Monsignore » Wed Aug 03, 2016 7:01 pm

I went to take my '83 GL1100I hack out to a parking lot to practice my turns and noticed the turn signal idiot light wasn't blinking.
I pulled over and none of the indicators would flash, the brake light wouldn't come on (though taillight works), hi- & lo-beams work, but indicator does not. Neutral & Oil lights work. Horn works.

I replaced all the fuses, but no joy.

Friday, I had unstuck the brake pedal. I removed the small cotter pin from the master cylinder assembly, and the little spring just forward of that, but replaced both of them.

I had also unhooked the headlight cuz I thought I needed to replace the Vetter fairing headlight housing, but I didn't need to replace it.

What should be my next step along the troubleshooting chain?

Use a test light and probe the turn signal flasher for volts with the key on..The flasher may be bad.

the brake light wouldn't come on

This can be the lamp it's self or the switch(s)..either the foot/hand brake switch or both.Again..probe the switch wire for volts.

hi- & lo-beams work, but indicator does not

When the high beam is selected, the same wire sends volts to the "HI (blue)" indicator lamp...Check the lamp..They don't last forever...Probe it's wire for volts and ground.

I had the same problem with my 82. I traced it back to a bad ground in the headlight bucket. Hope this helps

With the headlight wires in this configuration,

and positive tester lead attached to positive battery post and negative lead attached to the ground terminal on the headlamp, I got this reading for lo-beam (engine running)

and this reading for hi-beam.

I then attached positive lead to ground terminal and black lead to negative battery post and got this for lo-beam

and this for hi-beam

I then switched the red & green wires on the headlamp and got this for lo-beam

And this for hi-beam.

So, time for a new headlamp for sure. But can one of you interpret these numbers for me?

I have not checked the turn signal box thingy yet.

You have a bad ground....
With your DVM....black lead attached to the battery negative post....using the meter's red lead probe each of the 3 wires on the headlight...
With the key on switch the hi/low beam switch...There should be volts on one wire at a time and the green wire should have no volts at any time.If the green wire has volts, locate its ground lug and clean it or bypass it with a new wire to ground.
In my 83 interstate I did find a few corroded contacts in the faring plug...It is the lower left inside of the faring...below the pocket...

Thanks, Virgil!

The GL has a Vetter fairing on it, and the wiring inside is a bit of a jumble.

While poking around today, I discovered this on the left switch gear:

Probably not good.

Inside the fairing, the ground wire had a nice nick in it. It's not totally clear in this photo:

I also discovered this disintegrating wire leading to the rear:

And! This hose does not want to stay put:

For the nicked green wire, I'm gonna cut it and insert a Posi-lock between the two ends.

Oh yeah, I found these two things just kind of sitting in the frame, not attached to anything.

Minor update:
The horn doesn't work, either!

The left handlebar switch assembly is not totally closed correctly. I'm pretty sure the GL took a tumble at some point in its previous life, judging by the scratches and such.

For these two exposed wires, are they easily replaceable, or do I need to replace the whole switch assembly?

Now I have brake lights & horn. :?:

What did I do? I opened the left switch housing on the handlebar and maneuvered it around a bit. I disconnected the Mitsuba FR-3111 and walked to three different shops trying to find a new one. When I put it back in, I disconnected the wires going to the rear brake pedal, fired it up and tried the turn signals, to no effect. I plugged the rear pedal wires back in. Then, I thought to use the black tool tray as a sort of reflector to see if the brake lights were actually coming on, but I could never see them cuz I'm working during bright, sunny days. Lo, and behold! Brake lights! And the horn!

I ordered a FR-3111 from eBay, so we'll see what that does when it arrives in a few days.

I went ahead and swapped in a new relay, a Novita EP34, and I have turn signals!!

I do not have hi-beam or neutral idiot lights on the dash, tho. :|
