replacing battery negative (ground)cable

Postby mlmaher » Fri Aug 05, 2016 5:23 pm

Has anyone replaced their negative battery cable? On my 82 GL1100 it runs to this bolt that goes all the way through the frame. The bolt will not come out very easy. Not sure if this is normal or there is some other issue. I want to replace my battery cables with some new ones and would not like to put any more problems into the bike ie ruin the bolt. Thanks for any thoughts. Mark Happy owner of an 82GL1100.

That long bolt - holds the motor in the frame as well from memory.

Support underneath the motor with a jack of some sort - just enough to remove the weight factor and the bolt should slide out- maybe with a bit of lubrication applied as well. Should make it easier for you to replace the cable.

Cheers

You do not want to snap that bolt. Find one of the others that can be removed and install a new cable there. If none can be removed there might be a bolt that has some exposed threads, find a suitable nut and clean frame area where terminal will go for the best contact.

The bolt is likely corroded to the block. Try using a wooden dowel to drive the bolt out.

well I can rotate the bolt with a wrench so it's not frozen, I'm going to try supporting the bottom of the engine to see if that takes any stress off the bolt.

I recently removed that bolt when cleaning up connections, etc. I had to support the engine from underneath and get the weight off the bolt. It then slid out easily.

Update, so I supported the engine and my initial comment about rotating freely wasn't quite accurate. I sprayed some lube on the bolt and worked it around. It's moving easier now not quite sliding out but it looks like it will come out without any problems. I'm going to replace that ground cable. Thanks for the help guys!

You've probably done it now but fitting the negative cable to one of the other connections on the engine mounting brackets works just as well :-)
