Timing belt replacement

Postby romanfj » Mon Aug 08, 2016 6:48 am

Hi,

Finished the water pump replacement yesterday and went to replace timing belts using the instructions on the NGW website http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/10- ... orial.html and got stumped at "remove generator bolt cap."

Where the heck is this cap and where is the window that will show me the T1 mark when I turn the engine by hand? I couldn't tell from the photo.

Thanks,

Hi,
the Generator bolt cap is on the back of the motor. It's a little tricky to get to (hence the need for an offset ring spanner to actually turn the generator once the cap is off). It's a round aluminium cap with a large hex head in the centre.

The timing window is on top of the crankcase and can be seen from the left side of the bike. It's a round aluminium cap with a slot in it (looks like a massive screw!) behind the carbs.

Thank you! Definitely a couple of tight spots, though...Wish me luck.

I was able to wiggle in a ratchet and socket to turn the motor over. As long as the ratchet is set properly before you go in you can't turn it the wrong way and loosen it.....and it pops right off with no damage if you forget to remove it before you start the bike (guess how i learned that?)
