engine rebuild parts??

Postby Big Mack 13 » Mon Aug 15, 2016 12:42 am

Hello everybody!!

So last week i adjusted my carbs to get them to run better. sounds like a good idea right. well got the all back together installed and took it for a spin, bike ran BEAUTIFULLY!!! Took her down the highway hit about 140kph and pop..... idk what is wrong..... took it back to the house with a loud knocking, which eventually turned into ticking.

1. pulled the carbs out again to readjust. no change
2. check the valve clearance. no change
3. checked my brand new just put 600km on them timing belts...... the right side slipped on me :(
4. pulled the right head off. black as all get out and burnt up.
6. engine is out and i am going to rebuild it. why you may ask?? cuz I'm a fool and i need a project and a running bike.

so i am in search of a parts list that people my have to to rebuild their motors. I have only found a seal replacement kit for $110-$144 on a hand full of web pages. But i have not found anything that has bearings in them or pistons and valves. I have seen a few pistons on Ebay but if your going to fix something you may as well do it right and get a s new of parts as possible.

If anyone has any sources or a parts list they used to rebuild a 82 GL1100 that would be fantastic.

Thank you for your time guys!

go onto this site. it has lists of every part that was made for your bike, but some parts are not available, and the ones that are can be VERY costly so if you need help on some, let me know and i'll see if i can find them for you.............http://www.partzilla.com glad you made the decision to rebuild your motor. keep us posted on how its coming along.

The hard parts to find are the main bearings on the rods; try here they are making them for 1000's and have some for the 1100's

http://www.wingovations.com/index/4586592813

I have a set of good pistons..if interested pm me.

As far as gasket kits veshar/eBay has had good reviews but most still get OEM head gaskets
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

I found this site while I was searching.

What is the difference with the colors on the piston bearings?? is it not like a normal engine where all of the crank bearings are the same size?

i saw that on partzilla, the only thing i can think of is some of the parts have been superseded with new numbers and colors. what the difference between them is, i don't know. i think wingadmin might be able to offer more about that than i can.

After digging into the bike I started to notice a lot of neglect from the Previous owner(s). there was about a 1/4 in of gunk on the bottom of the crank case. there is rust on valve springs and on the main harmonic balancer(?) I don't know if that is the right word. either way there is rust on the one wheel that has the T-1 and T-2 markings. the clutch is close to needing to be replaced as well.

turns out this was as "good" thing to happen so close to home.

well, you now have to decide weather to sink the money into rebuilding the motor you have or look for a replacement motor.

Question for you guys,

I have ordered all my parts and was finally able to get my Crank shaft into my shop to have the MR3 look at it to make sure it was true and round. It has a few minor discrepancies with the roundness of the crank and bearing locations.

my question is what should be the tolerance on the crank be before I buy a new crank? hopefully someone understands what I am asking.

Thank you for the responses.

according to my parts lists and specifications chart, your crankshaft is used on all the 1982 and 1983 honda goldwings. assuming the specs are also the same. here is what i found..........

crankshaft
max runout-0.005mm (0.00019in.)
journal ovality-0.05mm (0.0002in)
service limit-0.008mm (0.0003in)

jorunal taper-0.002mm (0.00008in)
service limit-0.004mm (0.0002in)

journal radial clearence-0.02-0.044mm (0.0008-.000017in)

main bearing radial clearance-0.020-0.44mm (0.0008-0.00017in)
service limit-0.080mm (0.031in)

if im correct, those are the specs and service limits for your crankshaft, but take these specs to your Honda dealer/mechanic to find out if they are accurate.

hope this helps you.

No two engines will be machined exactly the same. So when they were assembling the engines, they measured the crank journals and based on those measurements put one of the crank bearings in, the thickness denoted by its color.

Rod bearing thickness by color

Blue 1.510 - 1.507 mm 0.0594" - 0.0593"
Black 1.507 - 1.504 mm 0.0593" - 0.0592"
Brown 1.504 - 1.501 mm 0.0592" - 0.0591"
Green 1.501 - 1.498 mm 0.0591" - 0.0590"
Yellow 1.498 - 1.495 mm 0.0590" - 0.0589"
Pink 1.495 - 1492 mm 0.0589" - 0.0587"
Red 1.492 - 1.489 mm 0.0587" - 0.0586"

Living in Sicily is not easy when you want to get things fixed :(. With the language barrier it makes it much more difficult.

So i took my engine into a shop to just get it cleaned and get all the gunk out of it because i live in housing on base( pain in the butt) The mechanic that speaks good English said i should make sure to get the new(used) pistons balanced. My question is do i need to?

I am comfortable putting the engine back together on my own without doing this(may not be a good idea but....) i will not be able to get another engine while i am living here sadly.

so what is the importance of balancing the pistons/engine at this point?

Thank you in advance!

Thank you for the article Stuart. So i knew all that but i have only work on larger engines and that is what the harmonic balancer does along with all the balancing of the pistons of course. It just dawned on me that the motor does not have one on the out side of the engine case. I will let the shop do what it needs to and maybe just let them put the whole thing back together :( which will cost a little more but we will see what happens.

Thank you again.

that might not be a bad idea. at least with them doing it, if something should go wrong, it will be up to them to make it right.
