Air filters

Post by tylers883 » Thu Aug 25, 2016 8:02 am

Why do air filters cost so much? wants $80 for k n filter for my gl110.

Are they exploiting our ignorance about filtering air? Maybe we ought to figure out a low cost solution and share it with the world ( well, at least goldwingdocs members)

Have you priced the Honda OEM filter? HDL has it for about 36 for a 81 GL1100.

Remember that K&N filter is designed to be cleaned and reused where the OEM is just thrown away. So after three filter changes, in theory the K&N is cheaper. Of course you do have to get their filter cleaner and filter oil but over 4 changes you should break even or be slightly ahead with the K&N. And you have to clean and wash the filter, let it dry, then spray the oil on it before reinstalling. If a quick change is more your thing then the OEM might be better.

Unless you are specifically looking for a K & N lots of places have cheaper filters.

I went K&N, next time it will be the OEM route to eliminate the PIA factor.

You got that right about the PIA factor. Stay with OEM or after market.

Not to mention the very poor job K&N does at filtering particulates out of the air.
