engine balks when cranking starter

Postby 1982ratwing » Fri Aug 26, 2016 9:15 pm

I searched this forum before posting but didn't find any information so I apologize if it has been discussed before.1982 gl1100 Interstate.I have double checked the cylinder compression, valve lash, timing belt and crankshaft timing marks, spark at the plugs and fuel delivery at the carbs. So far the starter cranks the engine fine but it won't fire up.I know from reading this forum that there could be a multitude of reasons for this but here is my question:When I hit the starter button it cranks the engine fine until I crack the throttle and open the carb throttle plates. That's when it will bog down or even stop cranking momentarily and then start cranking again. Is this an indication of what might be wrong and why it won't run? Also sometimes it pops back through carbs while cranking. Please tell me if you know why this is happening.

To me your description sounds like the timing is advanced a little too much, although that should affect it without opening the throttle. Timing is on the back of the motor and is kind of bullet proof.

Have you had it running yet? How are the plugs? New? Clean? Oily?

The more info you give, the more likely someone will be able to help.

it does sound like the timing could be off, but does this happen when your trying to start the engine from cold or is this an every time start up event? here's something you might want to try. this is how i fire up my 83 aspy after its been sitting overnight. before you go to start the bike up, pull the choke out all the way out, give the throttle one twist, release the throttle then press the starter button. see if that makes any difference.

PUll the air box off and check for fuel in plenum before you crank and while..could be flooding..
