Gas Leak on GL1100

Postby psever » Fri Sep 09, 2016 2:24 pm

I am new to these bikes and fairly new to working on bikes. I bought a 1981 GL1100 that was running, but barely... I rode it home from about 40 miles away. On the way I lost an entire tank of gas... couldn't smell it or anything... just watched my reader slowly go to nothing... When I was home I put some more gas in expecting to fire it up and see where the gas leak is. The problem is that I cannot get it to leak a drop of gas when it is in my driveway... Making me think that it will only leak at interstate speeds... Ideas?

Someone with more experience will be along but for now .the pipe from the tank goes through the filter then to the fuel pump and into the carbs.I would imagine you would have a very strong smell of fuel if a leak occurs anywhere along there .so I'm thinking a leak in the fuel tank itself hope this helps

I'm not sure if it's possible for this to lose that much gas.....but....check the accelerator pump. The first summer I had my 83 I was often smelling gas but couldn't find where it was coming from. Late in the season the engine was wet with gas under #3 carb. The port was plugged and the diaphragm failed...every twist of the throttle would squirt gas up the rod for the diaphragm and it would end up all over carb #3, then leak down onto the engine.

Look at the weep hole on the fuel pump if it's stained it's leaking..on the rear side just below the seal
