81 gl1100 possible head gasket

Postby 700FD » Wed Sep 14, 2016 10:47 pm

Been looking through the forums, I want to thank you guys for all the information contained here, but have ran I to an issue that seems to contridict itself. Here's the story:

Over the weekend we took off on a ride to Pennsylvania, within 10 miles of starting the bike up and taking off collant was spewing out of the top of the radiator, so much it soaked my right leg. Pulled off the road and trailered the bike to local dealer. Dealer inspected but didn't have a tech available to pressure test, given the bikes age my first thought was the cap let go, purchased the stant replacement cap, took off down the road and same thing, bike back in trailer and off we go. Get to our location and tear into the front end, replaced thermostat, refilled and burped bike rode fine for 60 miles then the same coolant out the top. Now fast forward to yesterday, pulled radiator again and noticed the flange where the cap and neck meet it bent, so installed a tested good radiator, flushed and filled system. With cap off I do get a few "bubbles" but they are on start up as well as warm, cracking into throttle doesn't always cause them. Does put a puff of smoke out right side on cold starts but only the first puff doesn't linger, doesn't smell sweet. Pulled plugs no "steam clean" on any cylinder. Dropped headers no visible "steam cleaning" there either. Am I looking at head gaskets or another issue?

Doesn't sound like head gasket..can you run with the plastics off/open and watch where the water is coming from?? Should be obvious once it starts spewing.

Before the change of radiator it was coming right underneath the cap where the mating lip was damaged or deformed....I now have the other radiator installed, pressure tested, with no leaks. Ran the bike last night at idle in the garage for over an hour and ran through many fan cycles, no over heating, seemed to be normal, other than the puff of smoke on cold starts and the intermittent bubbles in the radiator with the cap off.

I thank you, I have been scratching my head over that issue for the last few days...would love to take a ride but in the fiasco of changing the radiator, and starting the bike a few times, the starter decided to go on vacation, thought at first was the solenoid, but a little tapping on the starter and 12v directly to it, it tries to spin. I'm not doing to bad for the bike at a good price, needed tires carbs cleaned a few other things and I am still way under 1k in it, so a new starter won't hurt to much.

Rebuild the starter, there is a nice DIY here and the parts are under $15 (US) on E-bay.
Lots of talk about this issue, do a quick search on the 1100 forum to find out.
I did it, about 10.000 miles ago- no problems at all. It will start faster, and it does makes a bit of difference. Regards, Johnny
