New to me 82 GL1100 A

Postby Outlan22 » Thu Sep 15, 2016 9:14 pm

Hello all, new to the fourm.
Just picked up an 82 GL1100 Aspencade at a local auction. Motor seems to run find but it does chatter some when taking off in first gear, noise goes away with speed. But seems to do it in all gears and starts to bog down in third and loses power. Any thoughts?

It's not unusual to discover upon buying one of these oldies that the carbs need to be cleaned/rebuilt. The symptoms you describe suggest to me that that is the case. While idling, check whether or not each cylinder is firing by pulling a wire off of each plug one at a time. You should notice a drop in idle if that cylinder is firing. If you find that a cylinder is not firing, check for spark to that cylinder. If no spark, well, you'll need to look further for the solution, but you may have discovered the problem. If you do have spark and the cylinder is not firing, then the problem is quite likely with the carbs. You should also be concerned with the age of the gas and whether or not the tank is rusty. I recently read where someone got up to 5K rpms and lost power. Turns out he had a faulty coil. Tricky, since the coil checked out OK at idle.

Run some Seafoam thru the system. 1/2 can per tank should work.
It does sound like it is starving for gas. While it most likely will not fix the problem, Seafoam should clean things up a bit and offer a clue to whats going on. Carb rebuild, etc.
Change the timing belts ASAP. Its cheap insurance for your motor. Regards, Johnny

Thanks for the suggestions, will swing through town after work and pick up a can of seafoam. Will start with that and see what progress I get. Going to order up some new timing belt as well.

Chatter is often caused by out of synch carbs. Something else to check would be the condition of the fuel filter and gas cap vent....issues there could cause starving. It would be a good place to start.

Check the plugs at idling, front left (2) and back right (3) when pulled and held so spark still jumps, rpm seems to increase??? And can hear what I assume is the spark jumping to plug. Back left (4) and front right (1) can hear same spark noise but when pulled our passed spark jump length motor dies. Fast when plug (1) is pulled the (4).
Thinking have two cylinders running sofar.
