Big question are there any wobble or handling problems? This will help. The first thing you might want to do is check all of the "external bolts" for tightness. Fork Tree bolts, Brace bolts, caliper bolts and axle hadware (bearings sideplay on the wheel etc.). Some are hard fixed and you also have the bolts that allow the calipers to float. Internally what might be causing it is a loose piston which is secured in the fork by a bolt located on the very bottom of each lower. If one of these is loose however you would see fork fluid around the axle. You could also have worn bearing sleeves. There are two in each fork leg, one is below the fork seal and the other is located in the fork upper. Check the externals real good and if all appears good then go for fork disassembly.

If the knock is defiantly in the forks, I'd want to make sure it's all good. the bushings in my forks were very worn, I was surprised at the feel after. If you go that far, you'd change seals and add fluid. Not much left to troubleshoot. Sounds like a good project to me, instead of worrying about it, just do it!
