The original light is somewhat anemic. Fortunately, there are some things you can do.

First off, a lot of the original headlights have the reflective surface inside wearing out/off. This reduces the light output significantly. You can replace it with this headlight for VW buses that fit perfectly into the 1100 fairing. They'll sell them for $24.95 apiece.

Next, you can replace the bulb with a Sylvania Silverstar H4 bulb. It draws the same amount of current as the original bulb, but is quite a bit brighter. Make sure you get the motorcycle version, which is more resistant to vibration than the regular car version. You can find them online for around $20 or so.

Lastly, you can add auxiliary lights. I have two driving lights that I put on, with 35 watt H4 bulbs in them - read about them here. They make quite a difference as well.

Had the same problem with my 1981 GL1100I. The reflective surface in my headlight was gone. WindAdmin came through again. The headlight is a perfect match and the bulb he suggested is perfect. Wow I can see at night. Cost me $29.95 for the headlight but it was well worth the cost. Thanks again for the perfect solution!!
