Can anyone please advice have 1980 gl sounds a bit clonky on tick over as I slowly pick up revs in neutral sounds like single cylinder tractor from about 700 to 1500 but then picks up okay.The engine also sounds a bit knocking on tick over but once revved up sounds okay. I have just managed to start it after a 14 year layup the carbs are rebuilt and that was about as far as previous owner got can any one please advice thanks

what you are describing is clogged idle jets. and the 1980 has pressed in idle jets that most people do not bother to remove to clean when "rebuilding" the carbs. sounds like you will have to pull the carbs and really rebuild them. Best of luck !!!

If you have spark, next thing to check is fuel and air. One of the three is missing or insufficient.
Thank you for your reply what I have found is all the cylinders are working yet 1 and 4 seemed to be red hot on the exhaust manifolds and 2 and 3 are just warm. If I pull 1 and 4 the bike runs on 2 and 3 with a bit of backfire knocking etc can anyone help thanks terry

As Indianakid suggested, it's highly likely that the idle jets for 2 and 3 are still clogged.
Nostalgia is not what it used to be!
