No headlight

Post by mikie 1954 » Tue Oct 11, 2016 4:00 pm

On my 1983 GL1100I my headlight does not work. All other lights work (clearance , turn ) , there is no power to the wires at back of headlight, the fuse has power . Is there something in between the fuse and headlight that I should be checking?

OK........... the stater button is a two position switch. when it is pushed the contacts are made to send power to the solenoid to power the starter motor. at the same time another set of contacts in the switch are opened to kill power to the headlight. the reasoning is there will be more battery power available for the starter with the headlight off. so when you release the button the starter stops and the head light comes back on. so a possible solution to your problem is to clean the starter switch. you can try just spraying it with WD40 or similar but the best way is to disassemble and clean. best of luck.

Thanks . That give me a starting point. The switch hung up a while back and I used electric cleaner on it, maybe that's it .

IndianKid.......Great call. I will make a mental note about the starter switch/headlight in case I have the same problem down the road.
