'80 GL1100 now has no spark.....again!

Postby maritimeboy » Sun Oct 16, 2016 12:54 am

I have replaced cdi boxes with used off an 82, supposed to be good. I have new coils and new plugs. I had spark a few days ago but no fuel. I changed the filter and gas lines. I also pulled the top off the fuel filter and cleaned that up. I now have fuel pulsing out the 'out spout' of the pump.....but now I have no spark. I even tried putting the old cdi boxes back on, no luck. I am becoming very frustrated with this broken wing. The only thing I have not checked out yet is the pulse generator......don't know if I want to get that deep into this old thing so close to winter.
Any other input as to what I could check before going down that road?

Cheers :?

while doing all of the other work on the bike it is possible that the kill switch was bumped. make sure it is in the run position.

I was about to say the same thing indiankid said......make sure your kill switch wasn't bumped by accident.

Do you have one of those elcheapo spark detectors that you snap between the plug wire boot and the plug, and it will light up real bright to show you have spark? You could use one of them to check all 4 plugs. If no spark, try running a piece of scrap wire straight from the coil box to the spark detector and ground the detector to the plug.....if you get a spark this time, I would say it might be bad resistors inside the plug boot. I think they unscrew and can be replaced.

Check all the fuses?

Looks like I have more issues than that. The attached pics are what I found behind the headlight yesterday. There is another back further. PO made an Interstate out of a naked wing with homemade brackets and cable ties.......I have a winter project!

Maritimeboy........Holy Crap Batman! You better strap on a fire extinguisher to your Wing until you can fix those burning wires. Good time to fix the other common Wing wiring problem where you snip out the connection and solder it......corrosion in the connection makes the generator over-charge the battery making it boil. Did this to mine, and now the battery does not boil, but charges properly.
