won't fire or even act like it wants to.

Postby Chuck1959 » Wed Oct 19, 2016 7:27 am

I have a 1989 holding with a 1982 GL1100 engine. Got it for &350.00. I let some people look at ( shade tree mechanics ). Now I'm not getting fire to the plugs and im not sure if it ever had since it's been worked on. So here I am wanting to ride before winter sets in and the real work comes in. What gives the plugs their spark?

Ok, put new plugs in and then I found water in the gas. Pumped all gas and water out put about 6 gallons of fresh gas in and a partial bottle of stuff for water in gas stuff. The bike turns over fine but know spark. Keep in mind I'm an idiot as a bike mechanic. Where is the easiest place to start.

How did you verify the no spark condition?

Yep check the kill switch it should in the middle position. Check battery needs to be above 12v's. Then loosen all the plugs helps the engine turn over takes anyway compression....take another plug and put it in the plug cap..hold the tip of the plug on the engine..turn her over and look for spark, dark garage helps.. test all four: but 1-2 on the same coil as are 3-4. If you got a nice fat white or blue spark you are good. If 1-2 or 3-4 no spark means the coil or wires to that coil are bad. If no spark at all..back to pulse generator or battery. If you have spark then check plugs are the wet or dry?? dry equal no gas..check carbs, fuel filter, jets?? If wet and you have spark check compression good compression is above 150, Ok is 140's but these bikes will run even in the low100's
