Starter runs but not

Postby mortiki » Sat Sep 04, 2010 6:12 pm

I got Trixie's starter rebuilt finally and installed and everything was acting like new. We went to take a ride after testing around here for a week and after 40 miles we stopped to take a break. Wife was on Johnny so she needs breaks more often. When we went to take off the starter sounded weird and then started spinning but not turning over the motor. Starter runs normal and sounds like a new one but only starter runs. I pulled the starter back off and checked it and it is fine. I checked chain and sprocket and they are good and sprocket seems to only want to spin in one direction. Is there something I am over looking or is motor gonna come out real soon? What could problem be and what parts will I need to fix it? Appreciate any and all advise.

Most often this is caused by sludge in the sprague clutch. Have a look at this post.

Thanx Wingadmin, I have looked through site on this and hopefully I can pull engine and clean sprague clutch by hand without having to get more things for it. Wife is all over me to get her wing running since mine is almost done and she does not want to ride on back. I appreciate the reply and help.

A lot of the time the sprague clutch can be cleaned out and restored without disassembling the engine simply by using the Seafoam in the oil as was mentioned on that post. Save you a lot of time, and a lot of heartache from your wife!

without a kick starter I have no way to crank it. I told her that doing this I can also fix her sticking brake pedal with a zert, Change timing belt, flush radiator, and a few other minor things all at once.
