4 starters in one year

Postby guitarlos » Thu Sep 09, 2010 7:21 am

OK, I am at whits end here. I have replaced the wiring from the solenoid to the starter, I placed a 30 amp fuse in place of the dog bone fuse. I cleaned all connections and yet, I am still burning up starters.

I went to start her last night and she was dead as a door knob.

Is it normal for one leg of the brushes to disentigrate and leave the other at half usage? (in appearance?)

Is there something basic that I am overlooking?

Any help or advise would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you replacing or rebuilding the starters that are failing?

Actually , both ADMIN. I have replaced 3 and rebuilt one. I just dont get it. I took the present starter to an autoparts store and they tested it and said that its good. It spins pretty freely by hand by the spline. I put it in the bike and it just clicks. Ugh.

could be several things..locked up cylinders gas leaking in and causing hydro locks..pull plugs and see if she turns over, bad connection at the stud, bad battery..can show full charge but under load it dies..check battery while pushing the starter button..there's more but the dinner bell just rang!!

Have you ever changed the solenoid switch? If those big copper contacts are getting pitted and carboned up, you may not be getting the necessary volts and amps to do the job.

I did change out the solenoid switch with another , but it was used. Im pretty sure that is fin as when the start button is engaged, I do get 12.35 volts on the starter, when teh switch is at rest, I get no voltage. I cleaned all contact areas and made them shine. ;)

It just clicks, I can push start it, not fun and not practical, but just get a click.

Im beat, will try more this weekend, looks like rain anyways. ;)

Not normal re the brushes..maybe your spring is bad on one side..or the brash is stuck/too tight in it's seat? But just a click only has a few sources..bad battery but you say youi've 12.3 at the starter??, bad contact in solenoid..but 12.3 at starter, so if you've 12.3 at the starter stud then it has to be in the starter, starter clutch or engine.. starter binding up, starter clutch jammed or the engine is tight( hydro lock, in gear,) clutch not totally releasing adjust it, next try it with plugs out..to see if compression is an issue. if that works then you have a carb issue flooding gas into a cylinder or two..hydro lock, if not then starter clutch..drain 1 qt of oil put in some diesel, or seafoam or MMO run it easy for 100 miles drain and replace with new oil..see if that looses up sludge in the starter clutch. If still no go back to starter binding up and the fact that you have one brush eaten up that is a good bet..shaft not running true.

First eliminate things that it can be. Make sure the bike is in neutral for all of these!

- Locked up engine - remove the stator cap at the back of the engine and rotate the engine by hand to ensure it isn't bound up. You should be able to rotate it with the plugs in - you'll hear the "chuff" noises as the valves open on the compressed cylinders. That's a good thing.

- Bad battery. Batteries can show fully charged, and look like they are supplying full voltage, but can be damaged inside in a way that prevents them from being able to provide their full current. Try a known, good battery (even a car battery will work)

- Bad wiring between battery and starter or between battery and frame. Easiest way to test this is to use a big piece of wire (and I'm talking like a zero or one-gauge battery cable) and connect the positive terminal of the battery directly to the starter terminal. Careful: it will spark, so make sure there's no fuel or flammables around, and it may (should) crank the engine, so make sure it's not in gear!

If it passes all three of these tests, and you're STILL just getting a "click" - then we may be looking at a mechanical cause. Incidentally, is that "click" coming from the solenoid, or from the starter itself?

I had good luck with the ford soleoid, be sure you clean up the ground at the frame real good, there are washers under there that get ugly...later littlebeaver

Turns out it was.............

The ground wire from the battery to the frame. The frame bolt was loose. I decided that once I had it accessible, why not clean it up. It needed it.

I put it all back together and it started with ease.

What I have learned from this is that even the simplest issue can stop your bike and to take all information and perform each step and not to omit over looking things. In this case, I over looked the ground wire for the past three days. Ugh

Rains have stopped and I'm just waiting for a little dryer pavement to show up.

Thanks everyone!

Glad to hear you got it solved. Often electrical problems ARE a lot simpler than their symptoms would suggest.
