Timing marks

Postby zbird » Sun Sep 19, 2010 7:38 pm

Hello to all this is my first post. when i went to do my timing belts, as per instruction. When i turned engine over to the F1 mark, the timing mark on right side is dead on,the left side however is a tooth off from being dead on.I know they should be both the same.what should i do from here before i go any further.I tried several times and still get same positions.

If you're 100% sure that one of them is one tooth off, then take off the old belts, and correct it when you put the new belts on. If they are in fact one tooth off now, you are going to notice a big increase in performance and smoothness once you're done!

Thank you for your reply. After i take the belts off do i manually line the side that is off by turning that side only by hand.the mark on the wheel is below the case mark by a tooth and a half.

Make sure you're using the correct mark on the cam sprocket. You want to line up the "B" mark, NOT the "A" mark:

Thanks again. My wheels are slightly different. The right side does have 2 marks, the left side one.on the correct mark in the front edge is a corresponding tiny arrow.the left side has the mark on front of wheel with a tiny arrow also.the marks are still not both lined up on the case marks.I have a manufacture date of 10/81,don't really know if motor is matched or not,if that matters.

That's correct. Only the right wheel has two marks on it.

I did manually move camshaft wheel on left and lined up marks, after the belts were removed. After some wrestling with the belts i did get everything lined up as it should be.I then rotated engine and checked marks several times and they stayed lined up.This was a new experience for me with a motorcycle.i am sure elementary to some. Thanks for your support it is appreciated.
