Advice on a 1982 Goldwing GL

Postby jrombousky » Tue Aug 18, 2009 8:28 am

Hello Everyone,

I am looking into buying a 1982 Goldwing GL. I have an appointment to meet the current owner of the bike on Thursday. I want to make sure I am buying a good bike and I need advice on what to look for to make an intelligent choice in buying it. What are common problems that develop with Goldwings? He says he has done a mechanical restoration job and I have seen the bike(drove by on my current motorcycle) and it was all very shiny and clean. What should I look for? What should I ask the owner about to see if the bike is going to last me? I was also wondering about the milage of the bike, what is an expected lifetime of the bike?

When I search for common problems on this forum I find mostly that the rear break release hole will get plugged up and that I'd have to clean that out. Also there are some minor starter problems that develop over time, but that can be fixed with a 2 hour rebuild, following the incredible guide on this forum. Is there anything else I should really worry about?

With your help, I may soon be joining your Goldwing community. Thanks!

Verify with the owner when the timing belts have been replaced (if they have), very important on these engines. Check gas tank for rust, and ask if the carbs have ever been rebuilt.

Ask how often he lubricates the rear drive splines with Moly-60. If he gives you a quizzical look and doesn't know what you're talking about, I'd walk away.

Are you talking about the drive splines on the hub or the driveshaft?

Well technically both, but I was thinking of the hub when I wrote that.

How effective is the rear grease zerk fitting for lubing the driveshaft splines?

It seemed to work well - I pumped grease in there regularly, and when I took it apart last winter, it was well distributed and lubricated inside.
