to choke or not

Postby tcwin » Mon Oct 04, 2010 9:43 am

Does it make any difference if you warm up the bike with choke on or off? I know the bike runs a little rougher and takes longer to get up to temp. Just curious if I am doing any harm.
Thanks

I only use the choke just enough to get it started and keep it running. When it will idle without the choke, I don't use it anymore. 4 cylender Wings are cold natured. My 85 LTD is injected and doesn't act cold natured like the carbed models. It'll spoil you.

You should only use the choke until the engine will run smoothly without it. I start my bike up with the choke, and let it run for around 15 seconds (70F ambient temp) to 45 seconds (50F ambient temp) until I can then hold the bike at about 2500-3000 RPM with the throttle lock, and turn the choke off. Running the engine with the choke on for extended periods can clog up plugs and increase cylinder wear.

Thanks for the replies and advice. I just love my old Wing and would prefer to "do no harm".
