New Poster: Gl1100 Perf Probs

Postby bfvc702 » Tue Oct 05, 2010 5:37 pm

Have a '83 GL1100 that I bought new. I have riden it little the past 8-10 yrs. Been stored in-doors except last winter. Performance has progressively worsened each year. Started about 8-10 yrs ago when driving up steep hill at 70mph. All of a sudden it started losing power and bogged down. Now, power under load, even 1st gear, is non-existent. Idles real fine and can rev smoothly to 4-5k rpms. Exhaust pressure feels basically even from pipes. Spark plugs were carbon fouling and had to replace them frequently. Now using hotter plugs with less fouling. All plugs spark. Been using sea-foam lately, but not much run time yet. Any thoughts what systems to start with before I pull the carbs? Shop manual indicates accelerator pump as poss prob. There was a recall on them back in the 80's but never got them replaced.

How long have you been running the Seafoam in it, and at what concentration?

The last honda I worked on with poor torque ended up being the slides stuck and not letting the engine breath. The air cleaner was dislodged and the intake was gritty.Cleaned it up and scared me when the front wheel came up.

I used about 8 oz with maybe 4 gal gas. I've only been able to run the engine while stationary. Maybe 5-6 times for 10 min each. Another thing, When I first started having the problem I was using an oil treated air filter that I may have treated too heavily.

Pull one of the tubes off the block, open the throttle and see if the slide will move easly. It should float without sticking, don't pry it or scratch it.

You might replace the fuel filter before you tear into the carbs. Check the inside of the tank for any excessive rust from sitting so long. Also ride it with the gas cap loosened. You could have a clogged vent in the cap. However, since the bike has been sitting you probably need to go ahead and plan on doing a rebuild and get it over with. The recall you mentioned was for sticking slides and all they did was replace the slides with teflon coated slides. If you didn't have that done this could be your problem.

I would suggest checking out your spark wires at the coil, mine were burnt up on the ends pretty good when I got my bike a few years ago, I cut off the burnt part or cut the wire back 1/2" and it made a big difference..If you don't check it you will never know..Also while your there check the dark green ground wire to the coil [underneath to frame], clean that sucker up, I think the 83 is like the 81, you might need a mirror to see it..10mm socket and a 3" extention on a ratchet..Forgive me if you checked it all ready as your problem sounds fuel related...Be sure you check those three yellow wires..

Thanks for all the suggestions/advise! Nice to have a resource like this to help narrow down the problem. Have'nt had a chance yet to check on all the suggestions, but have to think that with all the years of setting with untreated gas in the carbs that where the problem lies.
