The starter is tied to the engine through a one direction clutch behind the alternator. It is designed as 3 bearings that bind to the shaft on a forward rotation and release backward. On my 83 I pulled the starter, stuck my finger on the sprocket and could rotate it easily backward and it would lock to the alternator forward. The starter does not have any bendix. It is direct drive from the motor to the output shaft thru 2 planetary gears. If the noise is intermittent I first suspect the clutch bearings are sticking in the housing, some seafoam or marvel mystery oil may free it up.The starter could be warn,so a dis assembly and inspection is in order. The clutch was sticking on my 83 and sounded like a bendix dragging.
I marvel mystery oiled it for a day and it cleared up.

Like he said...if you can get the engine started at all, putting some MMO or Seafoam in the crankcase oil and letting it dissolve the sludge that tends to collect in the starter sprag clutch will commonly fix the problem.
