Fan relay?

Postby ride r » Wed Oct 13, 2010 4:27 pm

Hi everyone, i'm helping a friend with his 81 gl1100 and his fan is not going on. Is there a relay anywhere for it? I will check the thermo switch tomorrow but wanted to see if there's a relay somewhere for the fan as that would be easier to test. Thanks!

There's no relay, the temperature switch switches the fan directly.

does anyone have a pdf of the wiring diagram? I unplugged the connector at the temp sensor and one side has voltage one has nothing. When i power probe the dead side with voltage i get a short out. I'm assuming there's a bad connection at that wire some place? Where does it connect? I really hope i don't need to disassemble the whole front end....

You'll find color circuit diagrams covering what you need on the "Manuals" page here.

The 1100 provides 12 volt to the fan direct.the fan switch goes to ground to operate the fan,so--with the key on the fan off,the fan will have 12 volt on both terminals.the thermal switch will have 12 volts on one wire, the other one is a green ground.when the thermal switch trips it will short the two wires together grounding the fan black wire. This completes the circuit. An easy test is short the bk wire to ground at the fan switch and the fan should run.(see pix)
