rear master cylinder compatibility questions

Postby dsimmonds53 » Thu Oct 14, 2010 12:59 pm

I'm having trouble with my rear master cylinder on my '83 Interstate. I rebuilt it, but it leaks ever so slightly. I've driven myself nuts trying to find a replacement on eBay. It seem that the line fitting on the '83 is unique to that model. Can another GL master cylinder work? And now for the $64,000 question. Is there a advantage/disadvantage in converting from unified brakes to rear brake on the pedal and both front brakes linked? It seems my local Honda deraler still has the master cylinder listed, but it's $215. Before I spend that kind of money, I'd like to explore all my options.

THANKS

You could retrofit it to a traditional front/rear braking system, and if it were me, I'd probably be tempted to do just that (I like having control over my front/rear bias). That said, you'd probably spend more money and time replacing all the components that you would need to replace in order to do that. If you are ready to give up on your existing master cylinder, the cheapest way to get where you want to be is to just find a used replacement on eBay or at a bike breaker.

WingAdmin,
I have a 1981 with single piston from calipers and need to rebuild them. Can I upgrade to the 1982 dual pistons without having to change the rotors. Your thoughts?

I don't know the difference in rotor widths between the model years, so I'd want to look that up to be sure. What would worry me more would be the difference in the master cylinder. The 82 onward has a master cylinder designed to put out enough volume to actuate two caliper pistons, whereas the 81 was designed to actuate only one. It's possible that your master cylinder might not safely actuate the dual piston caliper.

Where is it leaking? How could it be so difficult to use a master cylinder off a newer bike on these older ones... a total modification, there's gotta be a way.. So my question is this ... Who's gonna figure it out..???
