Wiring after market integrated led tail/brake/signal.

Postby nickgroves0308 » Sat Oct 16, 2010 2:41 pm

Hello all. I'm having trouble installing a new after market all in one led tail, brake, signal, lic. plate light on my 82' gl1100. I'm not sure how to wire it in. I figured that since you have been so helpful in the past, I might trouble you for some tips/tricks on getting the sucker working.

On the new light the colored wires are as follows: Red, Black, Yellow, Orange, Green. These are all single wires coming out of the back of the light. As I stated above, the light is a brake/tail/turn signal/license plate led combo.

Is there some kind of stardard for which colors correspond to which light function?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Keep the rubber side down.

HERE IS THE LINK TO THE LIGHT I PURCHASED.

From what I found, it is manufactured by Kapsco (that's their web site you posted), and sold all over the place as model TL-GJ-023-1M. If it didn't have instructions with it describing which color of wire did what (and it should have), I'd contact Kapsco and ask them.

Well, one of those wires is going to be a ground. Use a multimeter and do an ohms check from each one to housing ground. I'm guessing that on that device, BLACK will be ground (?) On the bike, GREEN is ground. From there, the remaining three wires are going to be for turn signals (2), run, and stop. You can find that by power hook up once you've established the ground.

You just have to be careful, as on some of the high-brightness LEDs, hooking them up backwards will smoke them.

Thanks for the speedy replies guys. I actually got it all squared away. It was incredibly simple once I stepped back and looked at the problem from a different perspective. I love this forum and all the members. You guys are really great.

Thanks again,

Ok, Nick, what did you do do to make it easy to hook up the wires? (just in case I want to do the same thing to my '86 Aspy)

Well maestro, when I first looked at the mess of wires going to the tail light it seemed like to many variables for where they might all fit. This was, in part, due to the fact that the aftermarket light I purchased did not come with any color coding instructions, showing which wires corresponded to which light function. After looking at the wiring diagram for my GL I kinda guessed on how the aftermarkets' wires tied into my stock ones.

On the aftermarket light there are 5 wires: Red,Black,Green, Orange, and Yellow.
Red - Positive: Wires into one of the solid green for tail light
Black- Negative: Wires into the only other wire for tail/brake light.
Green - Ground: I think this ended up being the brown wire or the green one with the yellow stripe.
Orange and Yellow are your turn signal wires. These tie into the blue and orange wires on the bike.

Don't over think it, like I did...and you'll be fine.
