1983 Aspencade Ignition Switch Fails

Postby fischerj » Wed Oct 20, 2010 2:24 pm

When the key is in the ignition switch and turned on (ready to start), and I push the key up, power is lost. If I push the key back down, it comes back on. I looked on the internet for an after market switch and apparently they will never will be manufactured. I looked on ebay with no luck

Any help would be appreciated with finding one or directions on how to fix it.

Thanks

Additional Question: Do other year ignition switchs fit the 83 models? I found an 82 switch on ebay

You probably don't have to replace the whole switch, just the contact base. I lucked out and my local Honda dealer had one - otherwise check eBay. It's a relatively simple fix. The base of the switch snaps off. Just be careful when you do it and note the correct orientation of the base to the switch. The tough part is getting the switch out (at least on the '84 Aspencade). I needed a couple of long extensions with a swivel. An extra set of hands helps too.

You can get a new one at =custom]partsnmore.com for $30 - however I suspect this is for the 82.

The 1980 GL1100 key switch uses part 35100-431-017.
1981 changes to 35100-431-027 or 35100-431-037.
1982 went to 35100-MB9-000, and this part was also used for the 1983 Standard and Interstate.
The 1983 Aspencade uses a different switch: 35100-MB9-951. Cyclemax Ohio has it for $93.
