Nations Starter and Alternator Services in Cape Girardeau Mo. For over 20 years I have used these guys and never a problem even on warranty. Went by place there3 yrs. ago for the first time and there place is spotless, clean, and helpful and know there stuff. Four years on this starter on the wing, no problems. HS-36N is the part number and is 136.95 ... I do not have any affiliation with them just a loyal customer.

There are cheap aftermarket starters that have plastic planetary reduction gearsets in them, that perform and last just as long as you would expect them to - so watch out for them. If it seems too cheap, i.e. too good to be true, it probably is.

Well now I know why it is always said to rebuild your original starter if possible. Plastic driver gears? man oh man. Will pull the starter off and have a look see Saturday (curious) and see for sure if it is plastadrive. At least see how it is holding up.

Exactly why I am asking for references here. His is a knockoff with the gear teeth knocked off. Original not available and oem from ebay may be trashed. Anyone else?

Dingdong, for what it's worth, I put a Rick's Motorsport starter on my 82 a couple of years ago. At first it seemed that I couldn't get my thumb off the starter button fast enough. Still working strong.

Nope, all you should have to remove is the shift lever. The front bolt can be removed/installed using a swivel joint. There is a good article in the DIY section on this fantastic site. I followed it and had no problems. Might as well change out that shift lever oil seal while you are at it. If its not leaking now, it probably will be soon if it hasn't been changed recently.

As stevenrikki said ,I bought a ricks 4 brush starter motor for my gl1 100 a few years ago still works great ,only need to touch the button ...you may need a longer lead from the starter as the connection is at the back (towards front of bike)

SneakyPete, the starter is made by Rick's Motorsport. It has four brushes and a permanent magnet You can probably get more info on their website buy here is a link to one on eBay but you can pretty much get them anywhere. The price is usually around the same but well worth it IMHO.
