Bouncy speedometer needle

Postby montgomery63 » Thu Oct 21, 2010 9:19 am

The speedometer needle on my 82 goldwing bounces up and down within about a 10 mph range on the speedometer dial while when the bike is moving. The guy I bought the bike from had replaced the speedometer, and obviously somethings not quite right. Any ideas on how to fix that? Is it likely the cable, or could it be the speedometer itself.

He also said that when he replaced the speedometer, the self-cancelling feature on the turn signals stopped working. Any thoughts on why that would happen? Thanks.

Sounds like you will need to pull the speedometer cable core, not the whole thing, and lube it with some grafite powder. You can get the grafite at any auto parts store and it is cheap. I fold a piece of stiff paper or light cardbord and dump some grafite into the fold. Then drag the cable core trough it as you reinsert it into the housing. Don't wear your good clothes. This ought to cure the wobble.

The self canceling circuit is triggered from inside the spedo and a position sensor on the bottom of the triple tree.Check the schematic for the color code and what type of switch it is.I have seen magnetic reed switches(2 wire) and photo interrupter(3 wire).

I just replaced my speedo as the trip reset knob broke off . So i took the speedo apart and can't see any where for the turn signals to be triggered from only electrical part in the speedo is for the lights . I thought the angle sensor under the triple tree was what worked the self canceling part of the signals . As the sensor turns them off as the bike gets to a preset speed and the angle of the bike are what turn them off . There are 3 wires coming off of the sensor one green with a white strip a black with a white strip and a white one maybe the PO didnt reconnect them correctly .

I have found variations in wiring but my 83 interstate would not cancel when going strait, only when turning.the spedo sensor reed switch was not wired up.the position sensor has 5 volt on one side ground on the other the center varies.check schematic for color code

i couldnt see it wires on my 83 i looked at an 83 wire harness that i have for a spare if its canceling when turning and not straight then some thing is wrong . My 83 will cancel out at about 30 mph when i straighten up after the turn just my 2 cents worth

The angle sensor only monitors the position of the forks with respects to the frame, not the speed or angle of the bike.I looked at my old 83,the spedo has 2 wires with female connectors.green and white/black,the same with my interstate.the old spedo is off a standard. As I understand the electronics, the canceler circuit monitors handlebar position on the white wire from the position sensor.center volts are about 2.5.swing the handlebars from one side to the other and the voltage will swing from near 0 to 5 volts.this tells the canceler you have turned the corner.the circuit also has a timer to auto shut off the signals,so you don't drive 30 miles with the blinker on.and last(at least on mine)the pulse switch on the spedo cancels the blinker just shortly after take-off regardless of handlebar movement.Look at the attached pix.there are variables,my current ride didn't have the plug in the harness for the spedo,i had to trace the wire and tie it in.
