83 GL1100I wont idle

Postby Bigbird0001 » Fri Oct 22, 2010 5:45 pm

hi all I just bought a 83 GW and it wont idle. It runs good as long as I keep the throttle bumped up. I have tried the idle adjustment screw with no luck. I am thinking it is the carbs but wanted to check here to be sure before I tare in to them. It will idle if I give it about half choke. Brian

Many will recommend methods to clean the idle ports without pulling the carbs off.Sea Foam,MMO in the gas, stuff a rag down the throat while running(creates a high vacuum pulling fuel through the idle ports)etc.Anything is worth a try.Just avoid carb cleaner spray,it will clean what you can see but not the air and fuel passages. When all else fails to give results,do the reading and rebuild.Pay attention to every detail.Make them like the factory built them and they will perform the same.

thanks for the advise will try that and hope it works so I dont have to tare down the carbs. The PO said the carbs were overhauled last Jan. of this year but he didnt ride it just let it sit in the grage and he said in April of this year it wouldnt start any more. I bought it "Not Running" got it for $1000. and switched it to the reserve tank and she fired right up. it only has 16,000 miles in it almost like new . But thanks for the advise and will try it right away. Brian

You can try sea foam but if the idle jets are clogged they won't clean out..need some flow to work..I'd pull the carbs and do it right..also I'd bet the mileage is 116,000..and change the timing belts probably original and if they break major engine issues will ensue
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

Hey Bigbird0001, I agree, you really need to get in and take a look at the carbs and clean them up, the slow jets or idle jets are clogged and need to be soaked in carb cleaner, be sure to measure the the float heights, if they are off you will never idle correctly..Blow out your fuel filter with compressed air or change it all together, balance the carbs and enjoy the difference..16.000 miles is a steal for that price, someone didn't ride it much maybe we should call you Banditbird.. I bet its Cherry...If you have never done a carb job, it's not that hard, I figured it out and I was green at it , you surely can do it..My idle needle [techometer] is almost prefectly still at idle with only a slite bounce, this is after it warms up..Before I cleaned them up that needle was like a baskeball in a NBA game..Good luck, there are plenty of guys here that are much better at it than I am so if you need help just ask someone here..later Littlebeaver

Just had the same issue with my 82'. Ordered a complete rebuild kit and DIY rebuild book from Randakk's and followed it exactly. Crud was all inside the carbs. After I reinstalled it started right up after about two revolutions of the starter. Idles like a dream. Its worth it.
