Clarion Type II CB operation

Postby WingAdmin » Mon Oct 25, 2010 1:14 pm

The CB on my bike is starting to get flaky. I got home from work the other day, and noticed the top half of my antenna mast (just above the load coil) had broken off. Luckily, I had a spare one I could install (from when, uh, "someone" managed to close the garage door on the last one, breaking the load coil in half).

I put the new antenna on, and got out my SWR meter to tune it to the CB...and noticed that my transmitter was operating intermittently. Great.

Something ELSE that I noticed however, was that when I tuned the CB down to channel 1, then kept tuning it downwards (expecting it to either stop, or wrap around to channel 40 - I don't remember which it used to do), it instead tuned to three "blank" channels, then it showed up "PA", then three or four more blank channels, then around to channel 40. Going upwards from channel 40 did the same.

I'm pretty sure I never saw this happen before. I can guess that perhaps Clarion used this CB circuitry for a regular auto CB, and that CB had a "PA" switch or functionality, which is why this was showing up.

So I have two questions - does this happen on anyone else's 1100 CB? And I wonder if I could actually install an external speaker and run it as a PA? :)

Looks like I'll be enriching Sierra's coffers with another $100 in the near future...

I have the same CB on mine.I,ll check. What was the SWR reading. If It was too high,RF is reflected back into the radio(this will cause strange problems).I don't remember any blanks or PA tho.

I was reviewing the schematic. The CB didn't appear to have a audio amp in it.It uses the main amp for the audio system.Soooo no external PA function. The PA indication...Could it be a indicator of the failing transmitter?Check those pesky glass fuseholders behind the turnsignals.I think 2 of them are for the CB.Yup.. black 3amp,red 1amp.

I haven't had the chance to do the SWR yet, as I can't get the transmitter to operate reliably. I'm going to have to re-do it once I get the CB working right.

This has definitely been the "if it's not one thing it's another" year for my bike!!

That's what I thought - I seemed to remember it working that way. I think it's off to Sierra this winter for it.

Dont you love it when these things pop up all of a sudden? Mine has no gaps or PA either, just rolls from 1-40 and back again. I was having trouble getting it to transmit for awhileand change channels too, turned out to be dirty switchs on the handle bar.Used contact cleaner and a pencil eraser to clean and di-electric grease to ward off any more corrosion. Works like it should now.
But you probly already did that
Ride safe, Todd

Yup, my switches are good, it's something in the radio itself, unfortunately.
