Removing thermoswitch and thermostat

How do you remove the thermoswitch from the housing and can I run a lower temperature thermostat than the 180.
My 83 Aspencade tends to run on the hot side. I have the radiator, thermostat and water pump flange off of bike. The fan was not coming on when it is supposed to. It's only 35 years old . Probably original switch. Have owned it for 7 years and it had 18000 miles when I bought it. Now has almost 50000

do not change the thermostat to a different setting.
that will not be healthy for the engine.

if the fan is not coming on, and you think the engine is hot, check out the power to the fan, and check to see that the thermo sensor is working.

short the two wires at the temp sensor and the fan should run.

When you say the bike runs hot, how are you measuring the heat?? Electric temperature gauges (as stock) cannot be relied upon for such information. Laser temp probes are better, while mechanical gauges are perhaps best.

Too, what is "hot" to you?? Engines should run between 190º and 210º in general. Many people think that lower is better, yet that is simply not true. If the coolant is puddling underfoot after shutdown, the engine may be running hotter than it should. The radiator may also be partially plugged. If there is no coolant on the ground, you have no real worries.

As I have the bike apart I will be putting in a new thermostat. The stock rating.
Can I get O rings and thermoswitch at Napa or should I go to Honda dealer?

Oem on the thermostat for sure, now as the rest, yes I would go oem. Fits the first time every time.

I have the bike back together but the fan is not coming on. There is a white dot on the thermoswitch and it is facing back toward the engine. I put the plug on and the black wire is on the top terminal. There is no color coding on the terminals. Do I need to reverse the plug?

Yes. And it is a new switch from Honda as well as the thermostat.
I am rotating the plug around to see if that works. Honda didn't give enough room or wire for my big American hands. Don't want to loosen radiator again just for that. They need to mark those things. My GM vehicles only plug in one way, no way to mess It up

Got it. It is now working. Now to waxing, new brake fluid and new front tire and I will be ready for the road.
