Noise when leaning to the left

Postby fatboy61 » Sun Oct 31, 2010 3:33 pm

I have a roaring type noise when I lean my 1982 GL1100I to the left. This is in turns and if you just make the bike lean left while going straight. I can pull in the clutch and lean her left and it sounds like its coming from the front tire but not real sure. Tires are Dunlop 491 Elite II front and rear. It does not do it when leaning right. I have inspected the tires, brakes and bearings and all seem OK. Any ideas????

What did you do to check the bearings?

Those types of noises are almost always either tires or bearings.

It could be the rear bearing, it sounds like it's from the front, but it's from the back. The back wheel is hard on bearings, lots of side torque.

I too am experiencing noise when turning left or leaning left. I also have dunlop elite II tires front and back. I am pretty sure the noise is from the rear and I believe it is because the rear tire has a serious "cupping" problem on the left side. Plan on changing it this winter along with a few other minor items. Might as well check the bearings while it is torn apart. It's also nice that the "how-to" section of this site has the play-by-play on how to do it.

Just checked the front wheel bearings. Will check the rear this weekend. Probably will change the bearings as a precaution.

Mine does it every time my rear tire wares beyond the 25% tread point which is cupped and I think all tires get that way at that point. Tire presure is key here . If you neglect tire presure the tires will cup and ware 2x faster than if you check it frequently. But when they get 75% worn thay all cup. Same goes for the front.

I had a bit of a scraping sound on left turns or leans. I cured it by placing the side stand in the UP position when riding. :D

LOL!!! Lucky it didn't cure you by placing you in the "laying on your right side" position, could have been a bad situation!

You only need two tools in life - wd-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the wd-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape!
