83 GL1100 rotted cross member and rear tire rub?

Post by Poolshooter83 » Mon Apr 02, 2018 10:01 pm

I have the common rot problem on the frame cross member. Twisted when I was putting up on center stand. Shortly after I noticed the rear tire rubbing slightly on the rear brake caliper bracket. I stopped riding and put the old wing up for the winter. I'm having the cross member cut out and a new piece welded in. I'm thinking I tweaked the frame a little now because of the tire ussue? Any thoughts?

The relationship between the tire and the swing arm doesn't change if the frame is bent. The tires seem to get wider with age and different brand tires are not always the same size so I would bet the tire rubbing and the rusted frame are not related. I have had a few 82s & 83s and I slightly bent the brake arm on all of them to give more tire clearance.
