GL 1100 starter Click w/out starting

Post by Patriccio » Thu May 17, 2018 8:44 pm

I have a 1980 GL 1100 that I have recently rebuilt. Several weeks ago a weld on my right muffler failed, & so I had to park the bike for a bit until I planned new system. I started the bike several times just to run it. Then last week I got the "click" when I hit the starter. I replaced the starter relay solenoid w/ a new one from Racetech Electric. I have a newer AGM battery. Battery was on trickle charger as I worked on the solenoid. Headlight works, as does high beam. Turn signals, brake light-all work. But I still get the click. It's in neutral, key is on. I think I've covered all the silly stuff we sometimes forget.

What's next to check? The starter switch assembly?
Has anyone else had this gremlin?

If you get a click it's not the switch. Could be the starter or it could be hydro locked.

I'm wondering if the battery is defective. I bump started the bike today, & it ran fine. Right before the bump-start, I hit the starter button, & it chugged just a little. Now, I'm wondering if that new AGM battery . . . Or it could be my trickle charger. If it ran today, then it's probably not hydrolocked.
Thanks for the input.

A hydro-lock will clear itself after a while, the fuel, or coolant if a headgasket is leaking, that flooded the cylinder will leak past the rings into the oil or if the exhaust valve leaks a little into the exhaust.

Update: Still a click
I put the battery on trickle charger again for several hours. Got a click again. Then my son & I put jumper cables from his bike to my bike's battery & left them to charge for about half an hour. His bike was running. Still another click.

I'm thinking that perhaps the battery is defective, or the trickle charger is defective, or the cables to the starter relay solenoid & starter need to be replaced.
I'm flummoxed.

Have you a volt meter? If so connect the + lead to the terminal on the starter, - lead to the battery ground and push the button. Does it show at least 10 volts?

Yea, I had two volt meters yesterday, until those tiny leads on both of them broke off as I tried to install new 9 volt batteries.
Today, I wheeled the bike out to the street for easy access & jumped the battery w/ my truck. I gave a little growl & quit. So I'm thinking the new starter motor has gone bad because I had the battery on a trickle charger all night. I bump-started it & drove it to gas it up, so it runs OK.
I had to bump it again at the gas station.
I'll buy another volt meter & go from there.
Thanks for the help.

That sure sounds like the starter is bad. DaveO430 has the right idea with the voltmeter. Your brushes inside the starter are likely worn and not completing the circuit. I had the exact same issue with mine. Replaced the starter and it's never turned over faster.

Thanks, guys.
I bought a new volt meter today. When I get a chance, I'll test everything under the sun.

Really shouldn't need to replace the starter, just the brushes inside, still available. Brushes = Cheap, Starter = Spendy.
They say 98% of all Hardleys ever made are still on the road..... The other 2% made it home.
(I stole this from somebody on another GW site...)
