82 GL1100 cam cover bolt seal replacement.

Post by duck and pucker » Sun Jun 03, 2018 4:33 pm

I have an 82 GL1100 and need to replace the cam cover bolt seals. The built in "stopper" at the end of the bolt is a problem. I know I can cut off the old ones, but how can I get new ones on without damaging the bolt or the seals (too badly that is)?

New ones are fairly pliable, push the bolt shoulder through them.

I replaced the seals on the bolts a few months ago on mine. I used a vice, an 2x4 end and a hammer. Open up the vice so the old bolt can pass through, but not wide enough for the old seal to pass through. With the pointy end facing up, take the 2x4 (to protect the bolt end) along with your hammer and tap the bolt through the seal.

To install the new seals, place a small amount of clean oil inside the rubber seal. Place the chrome part facing up in the vice. Take the 2x4 and the hammer and tap the bolt through the seal.

Hope this helps

wonderful. the old ones don't seem very pliable so I wasn't sure how easy new ones would go. :D
