83 aspencade speed sensor problems

Postby kycycles » Wed Nov 17, 2010 10:59 am

i am not getting a reading on the speedometer. i assume its the electric speed sensor. is there a way to test this piece. i dont have the manual. also, could the speedo gear be bad? i know it turns when the wheel spins.

I haven't worked with an 83 speedometer, but here's what the service manual says:

Disconnect the white 3-position coupler behind the steering counterweight. When the ignition switch is on, voltage between Green/Black and Black/Brown wire sockets should be about 10 volts. If not:

Check continuity of Green/Black, Black/Yellow and Black/Brown wires between the white 3-position coupler sockets and the brown 10-position coupler inside the instrument panel.

Also check the voltage between the Black/Yellow and Green/Black wires in the white 3-position coupler while slowly rotating the front wheel. Voltage should change from 0 to about 10 volts 22 times per revolution.

There's no mention of servicing the speed sensor itself - just replacing it.

ill try that. thanks much for that.

i did find a brand new sensor(which is almost impossible) i went ahead and ordered so hopefully it comes in before i get time to run the test. with any luck, ill bolt it up and be done.

if it does not solve my problem, i will have a brand new speed sensor if anyone needs it

Where did you end up finding a new sensor?

My buddy just told me, after telling him about my 84 speedo being off, that I should take the sensor off and clean it. Then remove front wheel and brake disc and open the wheel hub to access wheel like pick-up sensor and clean that up really well, and it should work like new..he says. I'm gonna do it, I'll repost with findings.
