What type of vacuum pump should I use to check and see if the vacuum is holding? Where can I get one?

Harbor Freight has different types of vacuum pumps for AC work they should do the job. Price range from 10.00 to 100.00 and more. All there stuff is made in china but it works, its cheap and can be easily replaced.

The Mity-Vac is an excellent little device, and is the most amazing help for bleeding brakes on your Goldwing as well.

I reworked my brother-in-law's 81 last year. It had set for four years because no one had been able to diagnose the rough running. I spent quite a bit of time narrowing down the problem. The vacuum advance was shot.

The hose worked for me. You may be able to hear the click but it also need to hold vacuum. If you use a small hose which fits the vacuum fitting on the diaphragm, suck up the vacuum, stop it with your tongue, and it should continue to hold vacuum against your tongue. If it doesn't even though you may be able to change the timing manually and hearing the clicking, the vacuum draw from the manifold may not be sufficient to hold it. You can even experiment with the engine running by plugging up the intake manifold connection

I had to get the second advance unit on Ebay before getting a good one which would hold. I managed to change the advance unit without removing the engine, but it ain't easy.

I just watched a vacuum advance test on youtube, they are not supposed to bleed off air, I tested my vacuum advance with the mitty vac and it bleeds off air, boo..I will fix it..Just key in "vacuum advance test" to see the test.. :D

After further testing and looking at it really well the canister is designed to bleed air out to the correct settings, it should be 3.2 hg on your vac gauge[mity vac,or hand pump] on my 81, cool design, it will bleed down and stop..There is a set screw on the rear of the canister, it has a seal on it, looks like epoxy, under it is a set screw that goes into the unit, screw it in and the hg reading will go up, back it out and the settings will go down, you have to keep pumping air and testing it as you go.. , if you don't have the cap over that screw your can is leaking I know this for a fact..Now when it bleeds down and stops it should stay there with the pump on it, it will hold vacuum... If it goes down from that point you have a hole in your diaphragm or a leak at the rear..Replace it because that hole will only get bigger in time.. I actually made a aftermarket one for my bike.. :D
