83 interstate steering stem removal

Postby ASUcontrol » Mon Dec 13, 2010 12:18 am

I am dismantling a 83 interstate and am down to the steering stem. There's a strange looking nut on the top with four slots. I'm sure there's
a special tool for this but can it be removed with a center punch and a hammer? I dont want to ruin the nut but I also dont want to spend extra money for a tool I'm only going to use one time. If anyone knows how to remove this properly please let me know.

I wouldn't use a punch or screwdriver unless you want a damaged nut, you would probably do less damage if you cut a piece of flat stock to fit the opening and pop the side with a hammer as it lays flat in the nut be sure to cushion the end with a rag or you will get shock treatment to your hand... Or make yourself a special tool. go to 1100's section on this site and you will get a idea for that..

YEp just a punch and a hammer. Once you get it started you can use some channel locks. Use a rag on the nut to keep from scratching it up.

Once you get it off and get the top triple clamp off there will be another bigger one holding the stem into the neck. It shouldn't be near as tight. The stem will probably start to fall out the neck as you loosin it.

It came right off.
