Valve Cover Gaskets

Postby gcatlett » Fri Dec 17, 2010 10:54 am

My 82 leaks about a dropper full from the valve covers when started in cold weather. I'm thinking about changing the gaskets out. Should I wait until I sync the carbs again?

One is not related to the other..unless you leak all the oil out.but by then it's a mute point.Plug the leak and ride it like you stole it.

Well, it's related in that you should sync the carbs after doing your valves - so if you're going to pull the covers off and replace the gaskets, and do the valves while you're in there, then sure, then it's a good time to sync the carbs.

If you can live with the oil leaks, then so be it. On my bike, I'd be ordering gaskets now. But that's just me. :)

also-- you might replace the rubber seals that go around the cover bolts. they loose tension after a while. they apply pressure to the cover gasket.

Yup, and also I put a thin layer of grease over the gasket to fill any abnormal vouds.

I have an '83 GL1100 Interstate. Really great shape. What I am looking to do is refinish the valve covers externally to look like new. Does anyone know where I can obtain OEM or after market valve cover gaskets? I would like to start this project before riding season starts here in about a month...yes, I am from the Chicago area. Thanks :)

To answer your question, NO, don't wait, change them. Why would you want to wait? (Just curious) BUT there are a couple variables I don't know. When are you going to sync the carbs? How much is a dropper full? Did you check the tightness of the bolts?

If it were me, here's what I would do...
Check the cover bolts to make sure they are tight.
If tight, I would pull the covers off and inspect the gaskets.
If gaskets are bad, replace them. (I don't like leaks)
Adjust valves when I believe they need it.
Sync carbs when I believe they need it.
