Is there a way to tell if the engine is the one that came on it from the factory? where do I look? 82 Gl 1100,And can you tell from the vin if it was a standard or an interstate? I love this site, it is nice to have so many people, with so much information.I just got another 82 wing to restore and I want to know what I am dealing with, it has the hondaline fairing but is has a standard tail light and signals, the speedo shows 19355.Thanks For any help you can give me.Joe

As far as I know, there is no (public) cross-reference between engine serial and VIN. However, you can tell from the VIN what your bike was when it came from the factory.

For GL1100's, the VIN should start with a "1HFSC", and following that will be three numbers:

020 - Standard
021 - Interstate
022 - Aspencade

Following that will be a dash, then two characters:

AA - 1980
BA - 1981
CA - 1982
DA - 1983

I have also see reference to some Japanese VIN's for 1980 only:

1980 Standard: SC02-2000040 TO SC02-2022041
1980 Interstate: SC02-4004778 TO SC02-4021991

Thanks for the lesson in Vin. I was wondering why my bike had the numbers that it did! I've got one..an Interstate 1980, starting with the SCO2 which you mention are Japanese Vins. Does that mean they were once in Japan and brought over or what exactly? Just wondering why the difference and why only 1980s? Thanks Joe for the information...I learn something new every time I log on! martin
