'82 Gl1100 Standard running rough @ low RPM

Postby brokenpnt » Fri Jan 21, 2011 3:07 pm

Could use some help trouble shootin'.'82 GL1100 42,000 miles. Misses @ low RPM and then runs smooth when I give the slightest of throttle. High RPM runs great. Have rebuilt Carbs including cut-off valves, new plugs(not wires), drained gas tank. Still runs bad, pops & sputters like it's only hitting on 2 or 3 cylinders, untill I give it some throttle?? Any help would be great. About to check valve clearance. Will this help??

Big question? Have you synced the carbs?

Yes,I synced Carbs . forgot to put that in original post. I've done so much to try to get this bike running right. It's so close.

You can go ahead and check your valve adjustments. Another thing would be to put some Seafoam in the gas tank. Sometimes even with the greatest cleaning in the world on the carbs, one spec of dirt in the wrong place, in this instance and idle circuit will cause idle issues.

Put Seafoam in today. Checked compression. All cylinders 145psi. Don't see any reason to adjust valves ? About to check for intake o-ring leaks??

Valves should be good. Go for intake "O" Rings let us know. You can spray water at them with it idling and see if there's a RPM change.

I would test the vacuum advance to see if it's leaking, but you may need to get in under it and take a look at the mechanical advance but before you do all that put a timing light on it and see if it advances while throttling up to about 3.000 rpm's..

Put your vac gauges on all four,Just to see what is going on ,Then Double check your carb sync.Is your idle set @ 950?

Pulse generator has some wires to a plug by the battery, take a look at that connection too, while your checking everything else..

Bad idle huh.Start the bike with as little throttle as possible.let it Idle badly for 5 or 10 seconds, shut it off.test by a light touch on the exhaust header. Warm=a running cylinder, cold means non firing. How many cyl don't fire?If 2,what is common?Non firing cyl at an idle is either, low compression, not enough fuel, poor spark, vacuum loss.are all 4 cyl within 8 lbs of each other?my old 1100 had 140,95,120,88 lbs.idled bad, popped, but would scream down the road.never could get the idle level.ended up re-ringing it.ended up at 150 psi dry, smooth and quiet.
