Drain?? hole near spark plug?

Postby lowmanj » Thu Jan 27, 2011 8:04 pm

I was surprised to find a hole in the engine near each spark plug.

The pencil is actually sticking in it. The hole at plugs 1, 2 and 3 are all the way through the aluminum.
The hole in cylinder 4 is in the same location, but not through the aluminum.
Are these there for drainage, or have they corroded through?
Why 3 holes are deep while 1 is not?
Hope it's not bad news.
Thanks

lowmanj : Yes they are drain holes to let water drain out and not set on the spark plugs. Dont know why #1 hole is not all the way through may be stopped up. Hal

Wheww! Thanks Hal. I was hoping so. I'll see about opening up the #4, gently. Where does it drain? Does it go inside the valve chamber and get burned up?
Also, when I pulled the spark plug boots off, the plug hole were full of rusty water. The rust from the spark plugs standing in water. I cleaned it all out and replaced plugs, but how do you get a good seal on that plug boot? I searched high and low and can't find a replacement for them.

lowmanj : No the water should drain out the holes and not into the engine, I have not looked on line for the plug seals as mine are good. Im sure that they are out there some where. Good luck Hal PS. Ill look around see if I can find some

Thanks Hal. I'll check on it right away. I'll be installing new wires and boots as part of my project, so the boots are a must. One is visibly damaged, and both let water in.
Appreciate the steer.
